Student Awarded for Hard Work!
Way to go Cassie!
April 11, 2008
A special acknowledgement and congratulations goes out to Cassie B. for her hard work and dedication to creating a top-notch Power Point slide show for the non-profit organization called Children of the Night!
Cassie has been in constant contact with the founder of Children of the Night's president, Dr. Lois Lee, who has been guiding her through the process. Cassie's goal was twofold: first, to create a presentation that would actually be accepted and utilized by the organization, and, second, to encourage others to offer their financial support. She feels strongly that this organization's commitment to helping these teens is vital and that they are instrumental in helping runaways to get off the streets and onto more successfully and rewarding adult careers. After Cassie sent the last preliminary copy of the slide show to Dr. Lee, Cassie has received news that they loved the presentation and are planning on using it on their web site and for other occasions that might arise.
Cassie is enrolled in Information & Software Systems II class at Stillman Valley High School and has been working on a variety of Power Points. The class assignment was to create a slide show for a non-profit teenage organization. Each person in the class was to contact the organization of their choice to obtain additional information about the organization as well as request other relevant data that might be included in their slide show.
After searching on the Internet for non-profit organizations, Cassie chose "Children of the Night." When asked why she chose this group as her project, Cassie said, "I've never heard of the issue of teenage prostitution before and it stood out against all of the other sites I looked at. I did not really know that there were a lot of teenagers who were prostitutes on the streets. I always figured it was adult women who were prostitutes. The number of teen prostitutes is growing every year, and a lot of them were forced out of their homes by their parents, and many were even sexually abused."
When asked how the project has impacted her overall, Cassie responded, "It has really made me think about how my life is, and how I often feel like my life is so horrible. It really makes me rethink that statement because their life is a million times worse. I have so many resources to make myself a better person, and I take them all for granted because they are readily available to me. Whereas those teenagers who are forced into prostitution or become prostitutes to get money to live, do not have those same resources. If they are given the chance, many of them may pass up these opportunities because they think their lives have already been messed up too much. They may think they are worthless or not good enough to receive the same opportunities as "normal" teens. Children of the Night really offers them easier access to those opportunities and allows their futures to become more than they could have been otherwise. I really admire Dr. Lois Lee and the rest of the staff at Children of Night for giving those teens a second chance to make their dreams a reality."
The Children of the Night non-profit organization is located in California and their primary task is to help teenagers who have left home and have some way or another turned to prostitution to earn a living. Children of the Night accept teens from anywhere in the United States; matter of fact, if a teen wants to escape the streets, all they have to do is call the hotline for assistance. The Children of the Night organization will do everything possible to help them get to California so that they are off the streets and safe.
Children of the Night gives the teens a place to stay, food, and educational resources so that they can turn their lives around.
