Project Runway in Business Basics

Students in Mr. Read's Business Basics class participated in "Project Runaway" on Tuesday, Feb. 27. Project Runaway offered students the opportunity to "dress up" in business dress, which involved paying attention to their appearance, grooming and hygiene habits, as well as their professional etiquette. The overall goal was to help students understand the importance of their appearance in the classroom as well as in the work environment.

Project Runway also challenged the students to think about the appropriate dress for various types of careers, noting that not all careers dress in the same manner. It is important for students to pay attention to specific career dress so that they do not under dress or over dress for job interviews. However, the emphasis was primarily on being well-groomed and having a neat appearance for job interviews as well as on the job. Mr. Read's class also discussed correct and polite behavior (etiquette) for all types of settings including dealing with peers, instructors, school staff, administration and customers. "I really enjoyed doing this project and it was a great way for me to know what I should and should not wear when I do look for a job," said Elena Schamper. "This project was really important, because I should know how to dress right," said Noah Coppernoll.

One of the major factors on whether a person will be hired for a job depends on how the employer "perceives" a potential employee. This includes forming opinions about a person's appearance, smell, cleanliness and mannerisms. Through our actions and appearance, others form a lasting, and sometimes detrimental, impression of us that we may never overcome.
