Winter Reading Buddies

Story image 1_0

This year we had over 60 Stillman Valley High School students participate in Reading Buddies.  High school students read to “buddies” in kindergarten through second grade at Highland Elementary.  This activity ran during the months of February and March.  The program models good reading and allows the younger students to practice the skills they have learned in class.  The young readers feel a sense of accomplishment while they build their fluency. Reading to the younger students can help develop a love of reading and provide a motivation to read.

Grace V., a student in Mrs. Hillard’s class, stated, “I loved them coming to our school and reading to us.  They were awesome, funny, and could really read.” Everybody who participates in Reading Buddies wins. Sophomore, Brennan Showers stated, “It is nice to see the kids because they are so excited to see you. It just brightens up my day.”
