Spring Athletes Become Reading Buddies!

On Friday, April 11, 2008, athletes participating in spring sports promoted literacy as a team approach. Coaches and over 100 athletes decided there was something more important then going straight to practice. Athletes, dressed in uniform, along with their coaches walked through the doors a local elementary school for a cause: promoting literacy. Athletes read to eagerly awaiting young people in grades pre-kindergarten to second for thirty minutes.
This was the last group of athletes this read to read to the children at a local grade school. After a full year of athletes participating in the Literacy program here at SVHS, the overall success has been great. The children have benefited from meeting the athletes that they often watch and look up to, and the athletes have demonstrated to the children, the power of learning as well as the importance of reading. We are grateful that so many of our athletes are willing to promote literacy to our children. Mr. Stewart, the Activities Director, after being asked about the program stated that, "All the kids loved it! This program was a BIG success!"
